How do I add mods to my Minecraft server?
To add mods to your server you will need to ensure that it's version is set to Forge. After downloading the mods you would like log into your server panel, then FTP File Access, and get into the mods/ folder. Once there, simply click "Upload" to upload them. The mods will load after restarting the server.
We do have a modpack installer however depending on how often mods are updated it can be unstable.
Where do I find safe mods?
Use reputable sources: CurseForge and Modrinth. Match the mod's Minecraft version and Forge build to your server exactly to avoid crashes.
Server crashes after adding a mod — now what?
Stop the server, remove the most recent mod, restart, and check again. Conflicting or outdated mods are the most common cause of startup failures.
Do players need the same mods to join a Forge server?
Yes. For Forge modded servers, players must have the same mods and versions locally to connect.
Forge vs Fabric vs Vanilla vs Plugins (Paper/Spigot)
Forge: most common modding platform. Fabric: lightweight, not cross-compatible with Forge. Vanilla: no mods. Plugins: require Paper/Spigot, not Forge.
How much RAM do I need for modded Minecraft?
Modded servers need significantly more RAM:
- Light modpacks (10-50 mods): 4-6GB minimum
- Medium modpacks (50-150 mods): 6-8GB minimum
- Heavy modpacks (150+ mods): 8-12GB minimum
- All The Mods/FTB packs: 10-16GB recommended
Need more RAM? Contact support to upgrade your plan. Let us know your modpack size and we'll recommend the appropriate package.
Common mod conflicts to avoid
These mod combinations often cause issues:
- Multiple world generation mods: Biomes O' Plenty + Twilight Forest (usually fine), but avoid 3+ world mods
- Duplicate ore generation: Remove overlapping ore mods
- Conflicting UI mods: Only use one main UI overhaul
- Multiple optimization mods: Choose either OptiFine OR Sodium, not both
Reducing lag on modded servers
- Use performance mods like Spark, Observable, or LagGoggles
- Pre-generate world chunks with Chunky
- Limit chunk loading with mods like Chunk Loaders
- Regular restarts (daily/weekly) help with memory leaks
- Monitor TPS with /forge tps command
Can I upload mods to my server?
Yes, you can upload mods manually. There's no built-in mod manager, so you'll do it yourself using an FTP client such as FileZilla.
How do I upload mods?
Download and install FileZilla – it's free: https://filezilla-project.org
Get your FTP details from your game panel (look for the "FTP" or "SFTP" section).
Host(Server Address): Found in Settings on your panel. If this does not work use your IP.
Port: usually 22 for SFTP
Username & Password: Username will be found in your Panel in Settings. Password will be the same as the login to your panel.
Connect in FileZilla.
Go to: /Saves/Mods/ If the folder doesn't exist, create one named Mods (capital "M").
Drop your mod folders inside that Mods directory — each mod should have its own folder.
Restart your server from the panel.
Where do I get mods?
Mods can be downloaded from:
https://7daystodiemods.com
NexusMods 7 Days to Die
Only download mods made for your current game version — mismatched versions are the #1 cause of broken servers.
What happens if a mod breaks the server?
If your server crashes, won't start, or throws red console errors after installing a mod:
Stop the server immediately.
Remove the last mod(s) you added from the Mods folder.
Restart and check the logs.
If the server still doesn't boot, remove all mods and re-add them one by one.
Pro tip: keep a backup of your world before installing new mods.
Are mods officially supported?
No. 7 Days to Die doesn't have official mod support via Steam Workshop. Mods are community-created and manually installed, which means:
They may break with every update.
You're responsible for maintaining them.
We can't guarantee stability.
What if a game update breaks my mods?
This happens often. When the game updates:
Check the mod creator's page for an updated version.
Remove outdated mods before launching your server.
Wait for mod authors to patch their files — never mix old mods with a new game version.
Can I use server-side only mods?
Yes. Most mods for 7DTD are server-side, meaning players don't need to install anything locally. Always read the mod's description — if it says "server only" or "dedicated compatible," you're good.
Quick Tips
- If you go into your mod folder, click on a mod and see there's a 2nd folder within that folder, you can "move" and set the location to ../ which will move the folder up.
- Restart your server after any mod change.
- Never upload .zip or .rar files directly — extract them first.
- Keep the folder structure clean: Mods/ModName/Config.xml (etc).
- Avoid running multiple overhaul mods at once (e.g. Darkness Falls + Undead Legacy = disaster).
- If something's broken, remove mods first before opening a support ticket.
- Please keep in mind it can take 5-10 minutes for your server to fully load since it's unpacking mods.
⚠️ CRITICAL: Before installing any overhaul mod
• Always backup your world first
• These mods cannot be removed mid-game without breaking your save
• Only install ONE overhaul mod at a time
• Expect 15-30 minute first load times
• Players must download the same overhaul mod locally
How to backup your world before mod changes
Using FileZilla:
- Connect to your server via SFTP
- Navigate to
/Saves/[YourWorldName]/ - Download the entire folder to your computer
- Name the backup with date (e.g., MyWorld_2025_01_15)
If something breaks, you can restore by uploading the backup folder.
Essential admin commands for modded servers
dm - Toggle debug menu (creative mode) cm - Toggle creative menu teleport [player] - Teleport to player kill [player] - Kill player (for stuck players) give [item] [amount] - Give yourself items
Many overhaul mods add their own commands - check the mod documentation.
Safe mod updating when game updates
- Wait 2-3 days after major game updates
- Check mod author's page for updates
- Remove ALL mods first
- Start server vanilla to ensure it works
- Add updated mods one by one
- Test each mod before adding the next
How do I upload or install mods on my ARK server?
Get the Mod ID
Go to the mod's Steam Workshop page.
The Mod ID is the number at the end of the URL. Example: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=751991809 → Mod ID = 751991809
Add it to your server Save and restart the server. This is common and almost always mod-related. Follow this in order: Delete the mod ID from your MOD_ID variable. ARK handles that automatically. Every time the server restarts, SteamCMD checks for updated versions and downloads them. No manual updates are needed unless the mod author breaks compatibility (which happens sometimes). Check your startup logs — the last mod listed before a crash is usually the culprit. ARK loads mods in the order listed. Important considerations: Popular breeding mods: Popular building mods:
In your panel, go to "Startup" which will be between "Network and "Settings" find the variable named MOD_ID or GameModIds.
Add all your mod IDs separated by commas (no spaces). Example: 751991809,1404697612,566885854,895711211 (<
Let the server handle the rest.
The server automatically downloads the mods from Steam on startup.
Don't upload .mod or .pak files manually unless instructed — that usually causes issues. My server won't start after adding mods
How do I remove a mod?
Stop the server.
Restart the server.
That's it — the mod is gone. What happens if a mod updates?
How do I know which mod is crashing the server?
Look for lines like: Downloading item XXXXXXXX... ERROR! Download item XXXXXXXX failed (Failure)
Remove that mod's ID and restart. If the server boots, that's your problem mod.Tips for Mod Stability
Mod load order and priority
Total conversion mod warnings
• Cannot be combined with other overhaul mods
• Requires fresh world (no existing saves)
• Players must subscribe to ALL required mods
• Expect 20+ minute initial load times
• May break with major ARK updates

Can I use mods on my Enshrouded server?
Enshrouded does not currently have official mod support. The developers have not released modding tools or a Steam Workshop integration, so there are no officially supported mods at this time.
Does Arcadia Hosting support modding for Enshrouded?
Not officially. We provide full file access so you can upload or modify your own files, but there's no built-in mod installer or guaranteed mod compatibility. You can manually install mods at your own risk.
Can I install mods myself?
Yes, you can manually add mods by uploading them through your file manager or via FTP. Just keep in mind:
- Mods must be installed manually — there's no Steam Workshop or one-click installer.
- Most current mods are community-made and unstable.
- Mods may break after every game update and will need to be re-installed or updated manually.
- Broken or outdated mods can crash your server or cause save-corruption.
Are there any safe mods right now?
A few lightweight mods exist (like minor inventory tweaks or no-fall-damage edits), but nothing is guaranteed stable. Each update to the game can change file structures and invalidate these mods.
Will official mod support be added later?
The developers have said they hope to add proper mod support in the future, but nothing is confirmed yet. When it happens, we'll update our hosting environment to support it fully.
Our Recommendation
If you're running a public or community server — stay vanilla for now.
If you're just experimenting privately — feel free to mod, but always back up your saves and expect to redo work after patches.
Manual file editing "mods" (Advanced)
Some players manually edit game files:
- Inventory tweaks: Edit
inventory.configfiles - Damage adjustments: Modify
combat.configvalues - Stamina changes: Edit
player.configsettings
WARNING: These changes will be overwritten by game updates. Always backup original files first.
Game update impact on manual changes
• Keep a text file listing what you changed
• Backup modified files before updates
• Check our Discord for update reports
• Expect to reapply changes after patches
• Consider waiting for official mod support
Rollback procedures for broken saves
If manual changes break your server:
- Stop server immediately
- Backup current broken state
- Restore original game files
- Restore world from pre-modification backup
- Restart server
- Reapply changes more carefully
This guide walks you through configuring, customizing, and troubleshooting your Enshrouded server hosted with Arcadia. We've stripped out the fluff — just the facts you need to get your world running right.
Where Do I Find the Config File?
Your server's config is at:
/server_saves/config/enshrouded_server.json
You can edit it through the file manager in your panel or via FTP. Changes take effect after a server restart.
Basic Server Settings
Here's what each field does:
"name"— Your server's display name in the browser"password"— Leave blank for open, or set to lock your server"saveDirectory"— Don't touch this unless you know what you're doing"logDirectory"— Same. Leave it alone"ip"— Always use0.0.0.0"gamePort"— Default is 15636. Change only if necessary"queryPort"— Default is 15637. Leave it unless port conflicts arise"slotCount"— Max players (1–16)
Performance & Gameplay Tweaks
Player count:
"slotCount": 8
Adjust from 1 to 16. More players = more server load.
Day/night cycle:
"dayTimeDuration": 1800, "nightTimeDuration": 720
Time in seconds. Default: 30-minute day, 12-minute night. Want longer nights? Bump nightTimeDuration to 1800 for balance.
Enemy difficulty:
"enemyDamageMultiplier": 1.0, "enemyHealthMultiplier": 1.0, "enemyStaminaMultiplier": 1.0
1.0 is default. 0.5 = half damage/health. 2.0 = double. Go higher for hardcore mode.
Player respawn penalty:
"playerHealthFactor": 1.0, "playerStaminaFactor": 1.0, "playerManaFactor": 1.0
Lower values = harsher survival. 0.5 = half starting stats after respawn.
Advanced Settings
Tombstone mode:
"tombstoneMode": "AddBackpackMaterials"
Options: "AddBackpackMaterials", "Everything", "NoTombstone"
Please keep in mind that Tombstone mode is currently bugged, we recommend you NOT edit it.
PvP:
"playerVersusPlayer": false
Set to true to enable PvP damage.
Farming speed:
"plantGrowthSpeedMultiplier": 1.0
Higher = faster crops. 2.0 = double speed.
Common Issues
Server won't start after config change:
- You probably broke the JSON syntax. Missing comma? Extra bracket?
- Use a JSON validator like jsonlint.com to check it
- Restore from backup if unsure
Players can't connect:
- Make sure
"ip"is set to0.0.0.0 - Check that
gamePortmatches what you gave players - If password-protected, confirm they're using the right password
Changes not applying:
- Did you restart the server? Config changes require a full restart
- Some values are cached — try stopping, waiting 10 seconds, then starting
Pro Tips
- Always back up your
enshrouded_server.jsonbefore making changes - Test major changes on a private instance first
- Don't go crazy with multipliers — 3x+ enemy health can make the game unplayable
- Use shorter days and longer nights if your group likes horror-survival vibes
Still Stuck?
If something's still broken after following this guide, check your logs at /logs/enshrouded_server.log. Most errors will show up there. If you're completely lost, our Discord is always open: discord.gg/h6RBFKqAFh
My server won't start after editing the map line
In your Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini (or your custom .ini), check this line:
Map=vehicle_interior;Muldraugh, KY
- Use semicolons (;) not commas (,) between maps.
- Map names must match exactly from the mod's
media/maps/[mapname]/map.info. - Base map
Muldraugh, KYshould always be first. - Save the file in UTF-8 without BOM.
How do I install mods on my PZ server?
All mod setup is manual right now. Edit these lines in your .ini via File Manager or SFTP (FileZilla recommended):
WorkshopItems=514427485;513111049 Mods=Hydrocraft;RavenCreek Map=Muldraugh, KY;RavenCreek
Each value must match the mod's mod.info and media/maps. Restart twice — first boot downloads, second loads.
My mods download but don't show up in-game
- Check
Mods=,WorkshopItems=, andMap=for exact matches. - Restart twice to fully load mods after initial sync.
My server crashes or says "mod not found"
- Stop server in Pterodactyl.
- Go to
/home/container/steamapps/workshop/content/108600/. - Delete the broken mod's folder.
- Restart server — SteamCMD will redownload it.
Server not showing publicly
Public=true
Ensure these ports are open: 16261 UDP (main), 16262–16265 UDP (players), 27015 RCON (if used).
Workshop mods aren't downloading
Stop server → Delete mod folder → Restart → SteamCMD redownloads it. If it hangs again, contact us — we'll refresh SteamCMD manually.
Where do I edit configs in Pterodactyl?
/home/container/Zomboid/Server/
Main file: servertest.ini. Edit via File Manager or FileZilla (SFTP).
Where do I find spawn coordinates?
Use map.projectzomboid.com and right-click for X,Y,Z coords.
Example: SpawnPoint=10650,9750,0
Adjusting survival settings
Edit SandboxVars.lua for loot, zombie count, weather, infection rate, etc. We can configure it for you if needed.
How do I back up my world?
/home/container/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/[servername]/
Backup recommendation: Manually backup your world before major changes or updates to prevent data loss.
How do I update mods safely?
Stop → Restart. SteamCMD auto-updates workshop mods. If a new update breaks the server, we can roll you back to your latest backup.
Quick Troubleshooting
- Server won't start → check Map= for commas or typos.
- Mods missing → IDs mismatch or no restart.
- Crash at boot → bad map dependency.
- Workshop stuck → delete and restart.
- Not visible → Public=true + ports open.
- Join fail → wrong IP or firewall block.
- World reset → ResetID changed, restore backup.

Can't connect to my server - what's wrong?
Smalland has specific networking requirements:
- Port 7777 UDP must be open - Both Windows Firewall and router
- Cannot join by direct IP - Server must appear in public/dedicated list
- Check server is actually running - Verify in control panel
- Server name length - Keep under 50 characters, no special symbols
- Version mismatch - Ensure client and server on same game version
Internal network issue: If hosting on same network as players, some users experience connection issues. External players can connect fine, but local network connections fail. Known game issue - try using hotspot or VPN as workaround.
Server not showing in public server list
Common causes:
- Port forwarding incomplete: Verify port 7777 shows "open" at canyouseeme.org
- Firewall blocking: Create explicit rules for both SMALLAND.exe and SMALLAND-Win64-Shipping.exe
- Server still initializing: First startup takes 5-10 minutes
- Steam server list refresh: May take multiple refreshes to appear
- IP/network configuration: Ensure using 0.0.0.0 as bind address
If external players can see server but you can't on same LAN, this is a NAT loopback issue with your router - not the server's fault.
Server crashes or won't start after update
Troubleshooting steps:
- Verify game files via Steam or SteamCMD
- Check console logs for error messages
- Delete and regenerate world save if corrupted
- Ensure adequate RAM allocated (3GB minimum, 4GB+ recommended)
- Check for Windows updates causing compatibility issues
- Run server as Administrator
Modded servers: Updates often break mods - remove all mods and test vanilla first.
How do I edit server settings?
Server configuration is in start_server.bat file. Edit with Notepad++:
-ServerName="Your Server"- Display name-WorldName="MyWorld"- Save file name-Password="pass123"- Server password (blank for public)-MaxPlayers=8- Player limit-Port=7777- Default port (change if conflict)
Important: Stop server before editing config. Changes won't apply while running.
Lag or performance issues on dedicated server
Optimization tips:
- Minimum specs: 3.2 GHz CPU (2 cores), 3-4GB RAM, SSD storage
- Player count: Reduce max players if experiencing lag
- World size: Smaller worlds perform better
- Background processes: Close unnecessary applications
- Network bandwidth: Ensure adequate upload speed (5Mbps+ for 4-8 players)
- Regular restarts: Daily restarts prevent memory leaks
Smalland is graphically demanding - make sure your hardware meets requirements for player count.
"Encryption Token Missing" error - can't connect
This is the most common Satisfactory 1.0 connection issue:
- Don't use "Join Game" button - Use Server Manager instead
- Add server in Server Manager: Main menu → Server Manager → Add Server
- Port forwarding: Both UDP AND TCP required for ports 7777, 15777, 15000
- Join from Server Manager list - Not from direct IP
Why this happens: The game's encryption system requires proper handshake through Server Manager. Direct connection bypasses this.
Server crashes with "Out of Memory" error
Satisfactory is extremely RAM-intensive, especially with large factories:
- Minimum RAM: 8GB for small factories (1-2 players)
- Recommended RAM: 12-16GB for medium factories (3-4 players)
- Large factories: 16GB+ required for complex automation
- Check logs: System → Audit Logs, look for "OutOfMemory True"
- Optimization: Reduce active machines, simplify belt networks
Contact support to upgrade your RAM allocation if consistently running out.
Autosave corrupted - server won't start
Recovery procedure:
- Stop server immediately
- Navigate to
.config/Epic/FactoryGame/Saved/SaveGames/server - Delete most recent autosave file (check "Last Modified" timestamp)
- If that doesn't work, delete next most recent autosave
- Restart server - will load from previous save
Backup recommendation: Manually backup your world before major changes or updates to prevent data loss.
Friends get kicked when I leave the game (dedicated server)
Known issue when running dedicated server on same machine you're playing on:
- Problem: Server appears to close ~30 seconds after host disconnects
- Cause: Game client and dedicated server share AppData directory
- Solution: Run dedicated server on separate machine/VM
- Workaround: Use Docker container for isolation
This is a known bug in Update 9/1.0. Dedicated servers should run on hardware separate from your gaming PC.
Server not appearing in server list
Troubleshooting checklist:
- Wait 5-10 minutes: Steam registration takes time on first startup
- Restart server: Forces re-registration with Steam
- Check ports: 7777, 15000, 15777 (both UDP and TCP)
- Firewall rules: Allow FactoryServer.exe through Windows Firewall
- Steam status: Check steamstat.us for Steam server issues
- Verify server running: Linux:
pgrep -f FactoryServer.sh
Desync issues - players see different things
Multiplayer desync solutions:
- Coordinate building times: Avoid massive simultaneous construction
- Network stability: Ensure stable connections for all players
- Regular saves: Save game frequently to maintain sync
- Server restart: If desync persists, restart server
- Factory size: Massive factories cause more desync - optimize
Daily automatic restarts help prevent desync accumulation (happens at 00:00 UTC).
Can't connect to dedicated server - "Connection Timeout"
The Forest requires extensive port configuration:
- Required ports (both TCP/UDP): 27015-27030, 8766, 80
- Test ports: Use yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports to verify all show "open"
- Windows Firewall: Create explicit rules for all ports or disable entirely
- Router forwarding: Forward all ports to server's internal IP
- ISP blocking: Some ISPs block port 80 - contact them if needed
Private vs Public WAN IP: If your WAN IP starts with 10.x, 172.x, or 192.x, you have a private IP and may need VPN workaround for port accessibility.
Server appears but can't join
Diagnosis:
- Version mismatch: Client and server must match exactly
- Server full: Check current player count vs max
- Password protected: Ensure correct password entered
- Firewall mid-connection: Connection starts then blocked by firewall
- Steam authentication: Verify Steam is online and authenticated
Try direct connect via IP instead of server browser if it appears but won't join.
Server not appearing in server browser
Visibility issues:
- All ports must be open: Missing even one port prevents listing
- Takes time to register: Wait 5-10 minutes after startup
- Server config: Verify server set to public, not LAN-only
- Steam server issues: Check Steam community status
- Firewall silently blocking: Try completely disabling firewall temporarily
Lag or stuttering in multiplayer
Performance optimization:
- Host specs matter: Needs decent CPU/RAM for smooth hosting
- Player distance: All players far from host increases lag
- Building count: Excessive structures cause performance issues
- Enemy AI: Too many cannibals/mutants strain server
- Save file size: Large saves (long playthroughs) load slower
Lost save/progress after crash
Recovery and prevention:
- Auto-backup enabled? Check if game made backup saves
- Manual backups: Copy save folder regularly
- Cloud saves: If enabled, may be able to restore from cloud
- Corrupt save: Sometimes previous autosave slot still works
Always backup before major updates or long sessions.
"Multiplayer not working" - can't join friends
Common fixes for connection failures:
- Verify game files: Steam → Properties → Local Files → Verify integrity
- Firewall exceptions: Allow SonsOfTheForestDS.exe through firewall
- Antivirus blocking: Add game to antivirus whitelist
- Network test failed: Add
"SkipNetworkAccessibilityTest": trueto server config - Steam authentication: Both host and players need Steam online
- Version mismatch: Game updates frequently in early access - ensure same version
Dedicated server network test fails
The built-in network test is notoriously problematic:
- Required ports: 8766 (GamePort), 27016 (QueryPort), 9700 (BlobSyncPort)
- Both TCP and UDP: Forward both protocols for all ports
- NAT Reflection: Enable "NAT + Proxy" mode in router (pfSense users)
- Skip test entirely: Edit
dedicatedserver.cfgand add skip parameter
External players can connect but I can't: This is a NAT reflection/hairpin issue. External connections work fine even if test fails.
Config file location and editing
Server configuration path:
C:\Users\[YourUser]\AppData\LocalLow\Endnight\SonsOfTheForestDS\dedicatedserver.cfg
Key settings in JSON format:
"IpAddress": "0.0.0.0"- Keep as 0.0.0.0"ServerName": "Your Server"- Display name"MaxPlayers": 8- 2-8 players supported"Password": ""- Leave blank for public"SaveSlot": 1- Which save slot to use"GameMode": "Normal"- Normal, Hard, or Peaceful
Editing tip: Use JSON validator (jsonlint.com) to check syntax before saving.
Can't find server in dedicated server list
Visibility troubleshooting:
- Server name length: Keep it reasonable, avoid special characters
- LanOnly setting: Must be false for internet visibility
- Ports opened: Verify all three ports forwarded correctly
- First load is slow: Takes 10+ minutes on first startup
- Filter settings: Check in-game filters aren't hiding it
Friends can add server manually in Server Manager with IP:Port even if not listed.
World won't load or crashes on dedicated server
World corruption solutions:
- Wrong SaveSlot: Verify SaveSlot number matches your world
- Corrupted save: Restore from backup
- Insufficient RAM: Game needs 8GB minimum, 12GB+ recommended
- GPU requirement: Dedicated server may require GPU (known issue)
- Fresh world: Try generating new world to test if save-specific
Black screen when trying to host server
Known issue with multiple workarounds:
- Run from game folder: Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\The Isle - Launch TheIsle.exe directly - Not through Steam
- Ignore Steam warning: Click "Ignore" when Steam connection warning appears
- Alternative: Opt into Beta branch via Steam → Properties → Betas
- Compatibility mode: Right-click .exe → Properties → Run in Windows 7 compatibility mode
Note: Evrima branch has different hosting requirements than Legacy.
How do I change server settings?
Configuration file location varies by hosting method:
- Settings file:
Game.iniin server directory - ServerName: Your server's display name
- Map: ThenyawIsland (Evrima) or Isla_Spiro (Legacy)
- AllowedClasses: Define which dinosaurs/roles players can use
- PlayerCap: Maximum players (affects performance significantly)
- Password: Set for private servers
Always stop server before editing config files to prevent corruption.
Server not visible in server browser
Visibility issues:
- Initialization incomplete: Server may still be loading
- Faulty configuration: Check Game.ini for errors
- Corrupted files: Verify server files via SteamCMD
- Filter settings: Check in-game filters aren't hiding server
- Server console errors: Look for red errors in console output
Performance issues - lag and low FPS
The Isle is notoriously demanding:
- Player count: Lower PlayerCap if experiencing lag
- Map choice: Some maps more optimized than others
- Server specs: Requires good CPU single-thread performance
- AI settings: Reduce AI count if using AI-enabled modes
- Regular restarts: Memory leaks accumulate over time
Crashes or instability
Common crash causes:
- Incompatible mods: The Isle has limited official mod support
- Corrupt files: Verify integrity of server files
- Resource limits: Insufficient RAM or CPU
- Version conflicts: Evrima vs Legacy branches incompatible
- Update issues: Game updates frequently break things
Check server console logs for crash reasons - usually shows error before crash.
DeerIsle map - server won't start or players crash
DeerIsle is demanding and has specific requirements:
- RAM requirement: 8GB minimum, 12-16GB recommended for DeerIsle
- Old storage data: Delete files in
\storage\folder after updates - Mission files: Use correct mapgroupproto.xml from DeerIsle mission files
- Mod compatibility: Many mods conflict with DeerIsle - test without mods first
- Spawning underground: Delete spawnpoints.bin in
\storage\folder
Player crashes: DeerIsle has memory leaks and scripted events - not all servers handle it well. Try different servers to rule out mod conflicts.
Mods not loading or causing crashes
DayZ mod troubleshooting:
- Workshop download failed: Stop server, delete mod folder, restart to re-download
- Version mismatch: Client and server workshop IDs must match exactly
- Load order matters: Core mods first, content mods after
- Too many mods: 10-15 mods max for stability - more causes conflicts
- Keys folder: Ensure mod keys properly installed in keys folder
- Storage folder: Delete
\storage\after adding/removing mods
Can't connect - "Connection Failed" or timeout
Connection troubleshooting:
- Version mismatch: Most common cause - update client or server
- BattlEye blocking: Ensure BattlEye enabled on both sides
- Ports: 2302-2308 UDP, 27600-27616 UDP, 26900-26902 UDP
- LAN vs Internet: If on same PC, use LAN tab in server browser
- Password typo: Double-check server password if protected
- Mod mismatch: All workshop mods must match between client/server
Server config - editing serverDZ.cfg
Key configuration parameters:
hostname = "Server Name";
password = ""; // Leave blank for public
passwordAdmin = "adminpass";
maxPlayers = 60;
verifySignatures = 2; // Keep at 2 for security
disableVoN = 0; // Voice chat enabled
mods[] = {}; // Leave empty, use -mod startup param instead
Common mistakes: Missing semicolons, wrong quote types, incorrect paths. Use text editor with syntax highlighting.
Weather changes not applying
DayZ caches weather in storage folder:
- Edit init.c: Make weather changes in init.c file
- Delete storage folder: Server reads from init.c only on first startup
- After deletion: Server will reinitialize with new settings
- Applies to: Weather, economy, spawns - most dynamic settings
Always delete \storage\ folder when making significant config changes.
"Server Not Responding" error when trying to connect
Common connection issues:
- Server token missing: Must generate and add cluster token in settings.ini
- Outdated game version: Client and server must match exactly
- World size too small: World must be Medium or larger for multiplayer
- Regional mismatch: Host and players should be in same general region
- Port forwarding: Default port 10999 UDP must be open
- LAN vs Online: If hosting on same network, enable "Show LAN" in server browser
How to generate and add server token
Step-by-step token setup:
- Launch Don't Starve Together (the game, not server)
- Go to Account → Generate Server Token
- Copy the token (long string of characters)
- Paste into
cluster_token.txtin server directory - Or add to settings.ini:
cluster_token = pasted_token_here - Restart dedicated server
Token issues: If token existed before adding, delete world data in /save/ folder and regenerate.
Server starts but players can't see it
Visibility troubleshooting:
- Cluster token required: Without valid token, server won't list publicly
- Name too long/special chars: Keep server name under 50 chars, avoid symbols
- Game mode mismatch: Players filtering for Survival won't see Endless servers
- Password protected: Must enable "Show password-protected" in filters
- Steam authentication: Both host and Klei account must be online
- Region filters: Check "All Regions" in server browser
Give server 5-10 minutes to register with master server list after first startup.
Mods causing crashes or not loading
DST mod management:
- Dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua: Configure mods in this file
- Workshop IDs: Add mod workshop ID like
ServerModSetup("123456789") - Mod conflicts: Test mods individually - many conflict with each other
- Outdated mods: Game updates break mods frequently - check workshop comments
- Client vs Server mods: Some mods client-only, won't work on dedicated
Popular stable mods: Global Positions, Health Info, Show Me (geometric placement), Combined Status
World regeneration or rollback needed
When to regenerate world:
- Major mod changes: Adding/removing world-gen mods requires fresh world
- Corrupted save: If world won't load after crash
- Season stuck: Sometimes seasons break and won't progress
To reset: Delete folders in MyDediServer/Master/save/ and MyDediServer/Caves/save/. Backup first!
Caves not connecting to surface world
Multi-shard setup issues:
- Both shards must run: Master (surface) and Caves must both be active
- Same cluster: Verify both use identical cluster name in settings
- Port conflicts: Master and Caves need separate ports
- Firewall blocking: Both server instances need firewall exceptions
Check server console - caves should show "Shard connection established" message.
"Server using different class table" error
This is the most common L4D2 server error:
- Version mismatch: Server and client must be identical versions
- Update server: Run
app_update 222860 validatevia SteamCMD - Beta branches: Ensure not on different beta branches
- Verify local files: Steam → Properties → Verify integrity
- Custom content: Some custom campaigns break class tables
Solution 99% of the time: Update both client and server to latest version.
Can't connect - "Server is not responding"
Connection troubleshooting:
- Ports required: 27015 TCP/UDP (game), 27005 TCP/UDP (client)
- sv_lan setting: Must be set to 0 for internet play
- Firewall: Allow srcds.exe through Windows Firewall
- Query port: Ensure 27015 UDP open for server queries
- Steam authentication: Verify Steam service online
- Direct connect: Try
connect IP:27015in console
How to install custom campaigns/maps
Custom content installation:
- Download .vpk file: From Steam Workshop or L4DMaps.com
- Upload location:
left4dead2/addons/folder - Server.cfg: Add
sm_cvar mp_gamemode coop(or versus/survival) - Map command:
map campaignnamein console or startup - Clients need it too: Players must subscribe to same workshop items
Popular campaigns: Suicide Blitz 2, I Hate Mountains, Death Aboard, Dead Before Dawn
SourceMod and MetaMod installation
Essential for admin control and plugins:
- Download MetaMod:Source (latest stable)
- Download SourceMod (latest stable)
- Extract both to
/left4dead2/directory - Should create
addons/metamod/andaddons/sourcemod/ - Restart server - check with
meta listcommand - Add admin: Edit
addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini
Add your Steam ID as admin with proper flags for full control.
Versus mode setup and team balancing
Versus configuration:
- Game mode:
mp_gamemode versusin server.cfg - Max players: Usually 8 (4v4) -
maxplayers 8 - Auto team balance:
mp_autoteambalance 1 - Round limit:
versus_max_rounds 4(2 maps, 4 rounds total) - Tank spawn:
z_frustration 1(tank passes if stuck)
Confogl plugin: Recommended for competitive versus - balances gameplay and fixes exploits.
Server performance and lag optimization
L4D2 optimization tips:
- Tickrate: Use 60 tick for smoother gameplay (
-tickrate 60startup param) - Rates: Set proper rates in server.cfg:
sv_minrate 30000 sv_maxrate 100000 sv_mincmdrate 30 sv_maxcmdrate 100
- FPS boost:
fps_max 0(unlimited server FPS) - Reduce zombie count:
z_common_limit 20if experiencing lag - Clean install: Too many plugins/addons slow server - remove unused

My Palworld server won't start - what do I do?
Common startup issues and fixes:
- Config file errors: Check if you edited PalWorldSettings.ini incorrectly. Delete it and let the server regenerate a fresh one
- Port already in use: Make sure port 8211 isn't being used by another service
- Insufficient RAM: Palworld needs at least 16GB RAM minimum. Check your Pterodactyl allocation
- Corrupted world save: Try starting with a fresh world by deleting the
/Pal/Saved/SaveGames/folder - File permissions: Restart the Pterodactyl panel or container if files show permission errors
Check your server Console in Pterodactyl for specific error messages - they'll tell you exactly what's wrong.
Server keeps crashing or running out of memory
Palworld is extremely RAM-intensive. Here's how to handle it:
- Minimum RAM needed: 16GB for 1-4 players
- Recommended RAM: 32GB for 5-16 players
- Large bases: Player bases with many working Pals can use 4-8GB alone
- Memory leaks exist: The game has known memory leaks - schedule automatic restarts every 6-12 hours
- Reduce Pal workers: Set
BaseCampWorkerMaxNumto 15-20 instead of max - Spread out bases: Multiple smaller bases perform better than one mega-base
Need more RAM? Contact support to upgrade your server plan. Let us know your player count and we'll recommend the right package.
My server isn't showing in the Community Server list
If your server isn't appearing publicly:
- Give it time: New servers take 10-15 minutes to register with the master server
- Check your settings: In PalWorldSettings.ini, ensure
bIsUseMultiplayOnlineMode=true - Public IP required: Server must have a public IP address
- Port forwarding: Port 8211 UDP must be accessible (we handle this, but verify with canyouseeme.org)
- EOS (Epic Online Services): Must be enabled in settings for public listing
- Server name issues: Avoid special characters, keep name under 50 characters
- Region filter: Players must have correct region selected in their filters
Players can always join via Direct Connect using your IP:8211 even if the server doesn't appear in the browser.
How do I backup my Palworld server?
Protecting your world and player data:
- In Pterodactyl, go to File Manager
- Navigate to
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/ - Right-click the folder and select Archive

To restore a backup: Stop the server, delete the SaveGames folder, upload your backup archive, extract it, then restart.
Players' Pals are disappearing or bases are resetting
This is a known issue with world persistence:
- Save corruption: If server crashes during auto-save, data can corrupt - always keep backups
- Improper shutdown: Always use the "Stop" button in Pterodactyl - never force-kill the process
- Base decay system: Bases can decay if not visited. Adjust
BuildObjectDeteriorationDamageRatein settings - Guild limits: Server has limits on guilds and bases - may need to increase in config
- Auto-save interval: Increase save frequency with
AutoSaveSpansetting (in seconds)
Backup recommendation: Manually backup your world before major changes or updates to prevent data loss.
How do I become admin on my Palworld server?
Setting up admin access:

Common startup issues and solutions:
- Config syntax errors: If you edited ServerSettings.ini incorrectly, delete it and let server regenerate a clean one
- Port conflict: Make sure port 27015 isn't being used by another game server
- Insufficient RAM: Vein requires at least 4GB RAM minimum, 8GB recommended
- Corrupted save: Try starting fresh - delete
Vein/Saved/SaveGames/folder - Missing files: In Pterodactyl, go to Settings → Reinstall Server to get fresh files
- Java/Runtime error: Check Console in Pterodactyl for specific error messages
Always check the Console tab in Pterodactyl - error messages will tell you exactly what's wrong.
Server isn't appearing in the server browser
If your server doesn't show up publicly:
- Give it time: New servers take 5-10 minutes to register with the master server
- Check visibility setting: In ServerSettings.ini, ensure
PublicServer=true - Port forwarding: Port 27015 UDP/TCP must be accessible (we handle this automatically)
- Firewall rules: Ensure VeinServer.exe is allowed through Windows Firewall
- Server name: Avoid special characters, keep under 50 characters
- Steam integration: Verify Steam servers are online (check steamstat.us)
- Region filters: Players need to have "All Regions" selected in browser filters
Players can always use Join by IP with your server address even if it's not listed in the browser.
How much RAM does my Vein server need?
Vein's RAM requirements depend on usage:
- 1-4 players: 4-6GB RAM minimum
- 5-10 players: 8-12GB RAM recommended
- 11-20 players: 12-16GB RAM recommended
- Large bases: Complex player structures add 1-2GB overhead
- Many active enemies: High enemy spawn rates increase RAM usage
Memory leaks: Vein has some known memory leak issues. Set up automatic restarts every 12-24 hours in Pterodactyl.
Need more RAM? Contact support to upgrade your plan. We'll recommend the right package for your player count.
Server keeps crashing or becoming unstable
Common crash causes and fixes:
- Out of memory: Most common cause - upgrade RAM or reduce player count/enemy spawns
- Corrupted world save: Restore from backup or start a fresh world
- Save corruption during crash: If server crashes during auto-save, the save can corrupt - always keep backups
- Too many entities: Excessive enemies, items, or structures loaded at once
- Mod conflicts: If using mods, remove them and test vanilla first
- Game updates: New patches can introduce instability - check official Discord for known issues
Backup recommendation: Manually backup your world before major changes or updates to prevent data loss.
